James West

James Delbert West, age 76, of Iola, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. 

He was born April 2, 1943, in Wichita, the son of Elmer F. and Luella B. (Brillhart) West. Jim graduated from Iola High School with the Class of 1961. 

Jim married Darlene Bishop on Oct. 3, 1961, in Miami, Okla. Jim met Darlene at Menegays where he worked as a short order cook and Darlene worked as a waitress. Jim then worked at Thompson Poultry Company, in Iola for several years. He then worked for the City of Iola for 27-plus years and retired as the Superintendent of the Gas/Water/Sewer Department. 

Jim had a lifelong passion for cars. On any given night, he could be found working on family vehicles or restoring antique cars in his garage. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and coaching his sons’ baseball teams. Jim was a lifetime member of the N.R.A. and belonged to many associations. Two that were close to his heart were the N.S.R.A. and Good Guys. 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Luella West; wife, Darlene in 2002; and one sister, Carolyn. 

He is survived by four sons, Troy and wife Patricia of Kingwood, Texas, Todd and wife Dorene of Cibolo, Texas, Trent and wife Erika of Basehor, and Travis and wife Amy of Chanute; 11 grandchildren, Kaylee, Chloe, Troy, Josiah, Tori, Dalton, Dawson, Ethan, Taylor, Landon, Trey and Tyler; one cousin, Diana Walker of Fort Scott; and many friends and family. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola. Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service.
