Nina Lee Johnson, 97, rural Elsmore, died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at Allen County Regional Hospital in Iola. She was born in Old Elsmore Community on June 18, 1921, to Fred and Clara (Miller) Thompson. At 14 months old, she lost her father due to a farm accident. She lived with her grandparents in Moran until the age of eight when she returned to her family.
She graduated from Olive Branch rural school, Elsmore High School, and Iola Junior College. She taught school for 11 years.
She married Arnold Lee Johnson on April 26, 1945, in Iola. After her marriage, she continued to teach school and assisted her husband with farming. In 1975, she and Arnold Lee organized and operated the J&N Chemical Company for ten years. She was a member of Elsmore Methodist Church, and a charter member of a teacher sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. She and Arnold Lee enjoyed entertaining the family for holidays.
Arnold Lee died in October 1991.
Nina is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arnold Lee; two brothers; and three sisters.
A visitation will take place at Elsmore Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Thursday followed by a service at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Elsmore Cemetery.
