Letter to the editor — August 18, 2017

Dear editor,
If you want to help all the needy people, teach them something.
Free handouts do absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. You are teaching these kids their meals come on a bus painted like vegetables and it’s free.
I also saw a picture in the paper of Humanity House fixing burritos for the kids, at the very least have them make their own. Why would the parents even try to make a lunch?
I know that these things pull on the heart strings of everyone, but common sense must prevail. You cannot fix this problem with money and handouts. You have to get to the core of the problem.
As long as Iola is willing to feed and shelter people making the wrong decisions in life you are not fixing the problem, you are perpetuating the problem.
Don Erbert,
Iola Kan.
