[Readers’ forum] Walkers beware!

opinions

My daughter, myself and two of my grandchildren, ages 8 and 6, were out for a walk on a sidewalk on South Sycamore.
I saw a big black dog and told my daughter that the dog was loose and looked mean so we headed out towards the street. The dog took off after us barking and growling so we began running and screaming. The owner came out of his garage, not in any hurry, as the dog ran to the edge of the road but never came any further.
I grabbed my cell phone and called 911. A police officer showed up and talked to the owner and then came to talk to us at the time we were almost a block away waiting for the officer. The officer told us the man had a shock collar on the dog and the dog has a boundary line. That’s why the dog never came past the road.
Whatever happened with tickets for dogs running at large.
I would have liked to have seen what the dog would have done if the officer would have gotten out of his car, but the owner knew I had called 911 and what a coincidence the owner was on his lawnmower mowing out by the road when the officer pulled up.
So why doesn’t everyone in Iola turn their dogs loose and put a shock collar on them and show them where their boundary lines are.
I know two wrongs don’t make a right but as of two hours later I drove by this place and guess what, that dog was waiting on his next victim.
We are lucky or should I say the dog is lucky. If it would have gotten one of my grandchildren it would of been a dead dog.
Just letting people know who have little kids starting school to watch out for animals that are allowed to run at large.

Sincerely yours,
Debbie Jones,
Iola, Kan.
