The Iola volleyball team will have its third coach in as many seasons, but they have managed to keep as much continuity as possible by promoting from within for a second straight year.
Emily Hampton has been elevated from the Fillies’ junior varsity coach to head varsity coach with the decision being made official at Monday’s school board meeting.
“I am really excited to work with the girls I got to work with at the junior varsity level,” Hampton said. “Now I get to work with them at the varsity level and I think they have a lot of potential. We also have some terrific leadership so I feel that this is the perfect time to move up.”
Hampton’s excitement to take the job stems from her confidence in the veteran core the team returns in 2017.
Senior leaders include Katie Bauer, Chloe Gardner, Colbi Riley, Madi Carlin and Karly McGuffin.
“They have a lot of experience,” Hampton said. “Some of them have gotten the repetition from junior varsity that has prepared them to be ready to move up. They are the right type of leaders we need to build a build.”
The most decorated Filly returner is in the junior class where Piper Moore has earned Second-Team All-Pioneer League honors last season after leading the team in both assists and kills.
“Piper and Mia (Aronson) both are very strong at the junior level,” Hampton said. “They are going to work well with the senior group.”
