Both Doug Desmarteau and Jeremy McGinnis could breathe a sigh of relief Wednesday night.
The Allen Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams took down Coffeyville 2-0 and 3-0, respectively, at home to get back into the win column.
The men had lost five straight coming into Wednesday’s matchup, and the women had lost three straight.
“It’s like a big weight lifted off our shoulders,” McGinnis said. “If we didn’t win, it really could have been like the wheels falling off.”
Under McGinnis, the Lady Red Devils hadn’t ever seen a three-game losing streak, so he saw Wednesday’s contest as a must win.
“For our well-being,” McGinnis added, “we needed to win this game.”
The women’s team is now 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Desmarteau and his Red Devils had been in the thick of a playoff race before enduring a five-game losing streak that left them 4-10 and 1-5 in the league.
But Wednesday’s shutout victory over Coffeyville has kept Allen’s hopes alive for a late playoff push.
“We’re still hungry and we’re still looking forward to getting more so we got a lot of work to put in,” freshman Jordan Velasco said.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Red Devils are essentially entering must-win territory in order to stay alive.
