Allen Community College’s softball team ended the regular season with a flurry of runs against Cottey College on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Red Devils won game one 11-1 and game two 14-0.
Game one featured singles, singles and more singles for Allen. The team finished the game with 14 hits — 13 singles and a triple. Erika King hit the triple and also had two singles with two RBIs.
Ashley Womack hit three singles and two RBIs. Jordan Barber had two hits and two RBIs. Emmy McManigal had a single and two RBIs. Cassidy Reynolds and Shelby Maycumber each had a single and RBI. Cheyanne Daniels had two hits and Justine Dougan added another.
Baileigh Rager started the game, going three innings, allowing a hit, run, walk and striking out one. McManigal finished the game off with two innings, allowing no hits or walks.
In game two, Allen flexed its power. Womack had a home run, double and single for two RBIs. King had an inside-the-park homer and two RBIs. Reynolds hit a triple and had an RBI. Maycumber, Erin Pearley and MyKenna Sharp-Hadl each had a double and RBI. Jordan Barber and Amber Searles each had a single and RBI. Haylee Hanna, had a single and McManigal added two singles.
Pearley pitched the five-inning complete game, giving up one hit, a walk and striking out four.
The Lady Red Devils finished the regular season 14-27 this season. It was a notable improvement compared to last year’s 6-38 record.
“Looking from last year to this year, we improved a lot, but with the talent this group has, I feel like we should have won more games than we have,” coach Jamie Jensen said. “Looking at the season, we did improve and did great, we just haven’t played to the potential of our talent yet.”
Jensen agreed it was a good way to end the season.
“Today was a great day, it’s what Allen softball is about. Everyone contributing, and our one through nine were able to hit,” Jensen said. “I hope we bring this to Neosho on Saturday. I think our bracket is set up to go to nationals this year. It has good teams that we think we can beat.”
ACC split with Neosho this season. The teams met on March 31 and Allen lost 2-1, then won 11-3. That win was eventually taken away due to a rules violation — as were a couple other wins. Regardless, the teams meet again this weekend for the first round of the Region VI playoffs.
“If we play like the second game, where we hit them well, I think we can win two games on Saturday,” Jensen said.
Allen heads to Neosho for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Saturday. If the teams split, there will be a game three at 1 p.m. Sunday.
