Allen County Community College’s Red Devils pounded out nine hits in an 8-1 victory over visiting Maple Woods Community College Saturday afternoon.
It was the season-opening doubleheader for the Red Devil softball team.
The second game was a bit closer and a little longer. Maple Woods rallied with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to forge a 2-2 tie. The game went into an extra inning.
Allen County started with Jenna Sigg at second base, as per tie-breaker rule, in the bottom of the eighth inning. A wild pitch moved her to third and Lenzie Boring was hit by a pitch. Callie Umholtz had the game-winning single to drive in Sigg for a 3-2 victory.
Boring was the winning pitcher in both games. She threw a five-hitter in the first game, walked four batters and struck out five. Boring allowed five runs on five hits and four walks in the second contest and fanned four.
The Red Devils scored five runs in the second inning of the first game. Kylie Taylor drew a walk to lead the inning off. Denise Swanson  and Kayla Johnston reached safely on bunts to load the bases.
Kelsey Walters drove home the first run on a single and Brianne Smedley delivered a three-run double. Kelci Owens walked and on a fly ball by Umholtz, Smedley scored.
Allen County added three more runs in the fourth. Walters singled and Erin Schwant went in to run for Walters. Smedley struck out, then Schwant was out on a fielder’s choice by Owens.
Owens moved to second on a passed ball by the Maple Woods’ catcher and scored on a double by Umholtz. Boring doubled in a run and went to third on a single by Sigg. Boring scored on an error.
Boring and the Red Devil defense worked out of several jams in the game. Walters had two singles in the game. Umholtz, Boring and Smedley each had a double while Sigg, Taylor, Swanson and Johnston had a single apiece.
Allen County scored a run in the first inning of the second game. Sigg drew a base on balls, moved to second on a passed ball and came home on a one-out single by Umholtz.
In the third inning, Sigg was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a one-out fly ball by Umholtz. Maple Woods’ run in the fourth came on a solo home run by Kylie Ball. The Monarchs produced the tying run in the fifth on a single, a walk, a wild pitch by ACCC’s Boring and a sacrifice bunt.
Sigg scored all three of Allen County’s runs in the second game without a hit. Umholtz drove in all three runs with two singles and Owens had a base hit.
Allen County (2-0) plays in the Evangel University tournament in Springfield, Mo., this Friday and Saturday. The Red Devils host Marshalltown Community College,  Marshalltown, Iowa., Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
