Red Devils claim victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Allen County Community College’s softball team lost a close game then rallied to win one in 10 innings on Thursday at Maple Woods Community College.
The Red Devils broke a 2-2 tie in the first game with two runs in the sixth inning. Callie Umholtz and Denise Swanson had back-to-back singles then Kelsi Owens doubled in both runners to put ACCC up 4-2.
Unfortunately, the Monarchs scored three runs in their half of the sixth to go up 5-4. Maple Woods held Allen County scoreless in the seventh to win 5-4.
Lenzie Boring was the losing pitcher for Allen County. She gave up nine hits, walked four and struck out six.
Swanson was 3-for-3 at the plate with three base hits. Owens had a double while Jenna Sigg, Kelsey Walters and Umholtz each hit a single.
Allen County scored twice in the first inning of the second game. Alex Hill drew a one-out walk and stole second base. With two gone, Umholtz walked and a wild pitch moved the runners up a base. Swanson delivered a two-run single.
Maple Woods tied the game with two runs in the third and took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth. Allen County capitalized on a one-out triple by Sigg in the sixth. Umholtz doubled to drive in the tying run.
The teams went through three scoreless innings. In the top of 10th, Tesla Allison was at second per tiebreaker rule and Jori Graf had a sacrifice bunt. Walters connected for an RBI double. Hill singled and Sigg drove in a run with a base hit.
Hill, who went the distance pitching for ACCC, worked around a one out walk to put two runners on the bases in the bottom of the 10th. She and the Red Devils retired the next two Maple Woods’ batters on a pop-up and a strikeout.
Hill allowed 10 hits, walked one and struck out six. She also had a single in the game.
Sigg had a single and a triple and Umholtz hit a single a double. Walters doubled and Swanson singled.
Allen County takes an 8-6 record into this weekend’s Midwest JUCO Classic at Broken Arrow, Okla.
