ACCC volleyball team falls in playoffs

ARKANSAS CITY — Challenging the top-ranked volleyball team in NJCAA Division II on its home court was not going to be easy. But Allen County Community College’s Red Devils were going for broke Saturday in the Region VI, Division II playoffs.
The Red Devils didn’t get the job done but they went down swinging. Cowley County Community College’s Tigers had to work for their 26-24, 25-14, 25-19 win.
The Tigers went on to down Coffeyville Community College 21-25, 25-9, 25-16, 25-13 to win the District N championship. They advance to the NJCAA Division II national tournament.
Also Saturday in the Region VI, Division II District M tournament, Johnson County Community College, which is ranked No. 3, won to advance.
“Our two sophomores — Nicole Rockhold and Andrea Miller — played with determination and showed our freshmen that working hard is the key,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC volleyball head coach.
“The whole team worked hard but we began making errors in the second set and by the third set, that fire had diminished.”
Allen County finished 16-20 overall. The Red Devils went 4-7 in the Jayhawk Eastern Division.
Rockhold delivered 12 kills at the net and one block assist. She also had 13 defensive digs. Miller had five kills, one solo block and three assisted blocks. She came up with six digs.
Erika Mack had 18 set assists and Karlee Bobbitt had nine assists. Nicole Reed, Rockhold and Mack each had a service ace.
Allison Jenicke downed six kills and had two assisted blocks. Putting down two kills apiece were Makhala Giardina, Mack and Leesha Plagens.
Jenicke came up with 11 digs. Reed had 10 digs.
Morgan Scott had five digs while Bobbitt and Mack each had four digs.
Giardina had three digs and Plagens had one dig.
