After opening the first week of practice Monday, the 2025 fall sports preseason kicks off Friday.
Iola High School will compete in three contests Friday and Saturday. The IHS cross country team will kick off the festivities with a team run at 6:45 p.m. inside Riverside Park. After the race, local football fans will get their first look at the 2025 Mustangs who will feature multiple new starters in key positions.
Friday’s scrimmage will be the only preseason action of the cross country team. Their first competition is Sept. 4 at the Anderson County Invitational in Garnett.
The football team will get one more dress rehearsal next week at the Humboldt Jamboree on Aug. 29.
They open the official season on Sept. 5 in Baldwin.
With Iola playing in the 3A division and Humboldt in 2A, this will be the only time the two Allen County teams will meet this season.
Next Friday will also be the only time the Humboldt Cubs will play in front of a home crowd. Humboldt opens the season at Caney Valley Sept. 5 and remains on the road the following week at Cherryvale.
The Iola volleyball team will show off its overhauled lineup with potentially five new starters taking the court Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. for the Iola Jamboree. They open the regular season Sept. 6 at a tournament in Rossville.
The Humboldt volleyball team heads to Labette County for their only preseason action. The Lady Cubs remain on the road for a Sept. 2 triangular against Colgan and Jayhawk-Linn.
Available schedules do not indicate the Humboldt cross country team nor the Iola tennis team and golf team will participate in preseason events. The Iola golf team opens the season Sept. 4 with a tournament in Oswego. The Iola tennis team’s home opener against Chanute begins at 3 p.m. Aug. 28.
Reigning Three Rivers League champion Marmaton Valley will play in the Central Burden Jamboree Aug. 29. They host TRL runner-up Oswego Sept. 5 in their home opener. The volleyball team does not have a preseason event listed but they will face host team Erie and Altoona-Midway for a Sept. 2 triangular. The MVHS cross country team will run for the first time Sept. 4 at the Burlington Invitational.
The Crest Lancers will participate in a jamboree at Madison High School next Friday. They will jump into TRL play by hosting the Yates Center Wildcats for their home opener on Sept. 5. The Lady Lancers volleyball team will not participate in a jamboree but face St. Paul and Central Heights for their Sept. 2 home opener. The cross country team opens their season Sept. 4 at the Anderson County Invitational.
Yates Center will not have to travel far for their jamboree as the Wildcats will host multiple teams Aug. 29. Following their final exhibition, the Wildcats open the season at Crest on Sept. 5. The volleyball team opens the season on the road Sept. 2 at Southeast Cherokee. The cross country team will join MVHS at the Sept. 4 Burlington Invitational.
In Le Roy, the Southern Coffey County Titans face Melvern for their season opener on Sept.. The volleyball team will host Uniontown and Pleasanton for a Sept. 2 triangular.
