CHANUTE — Former Iola High and Allen Community College baseball standout Levi Ashmore is taking his skills to Emporia State.
Ashmore signed a letter of intent last week to play for the defending MIAA conference champion Hornets, under the guidance of head coach Bob Fornelli, the Chanute Tribune reported.
“I really liked the program and I thought it was a great fit for me,” Ashmore told the Tribune. “I loved the school and the facilities, and I’m anxious to get up there and produce for the program.”
Emporia State has made nine trips to the NCAA Tournament in 10 seasons under Fornelli.
Ashmore was an all-state shortstop for the Mustangs, leading Iola to the state championship game in May 2013. Meanwhile, he was a standout for the Iola AA American Legion Indians squad that won back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013.
Following that, he played one season at Allen, where he batted a team-high .318 with 12 stolen bases.
Ashmore also played for the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs for the National Baseball Congress World Series over the summer, including a memorable 5-for-6 performance and the game-winning hit over the Everett (Wash.) Merchants.
He transferred over the summer to play his sophomore year at Neosho County Community College, under head coach Steve Murray.
