Chanute rolls over Mustang junior varsity

CHANUTE — Nothing went right for the Iola High junior varsity football team Monday against host Chanute High’s Blue Comets.
The Blue Comet junior varsity shut down the Mustangs for a 36-0 victory. It is the first time the Mustang junior varsity did not score this season.
Iola’s junior varsity is 3-2 with two games remaining. Labette County comes to Iola next Monday at 5 p.m.
The Mustang JV goes to Fort Scott on Oct. 18 to play at 7 p.m.
Chanute scored on a short punt return, a long pass play and an interception return in the first quarter. It was 20-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, a high snap on an Iola punt went out of the end zone for a safety for Chanute. A long run for a touchdown put the Blue Comets up 29-0 by the end of the period.
Chanute added another touchdown and extra point in the fourth quarter.
John Whitworth rushed for 16 yards on 11 carries. Tyler McIntosh had six carries for a minus-43 yards.
Tyler Clubine had three yards on two carries. Adam Kauth had three carries for no yards and Zeph Larney had one carry for one yard.
McIntosh and Kauth shared quarterback duties. The freshmen combined for  4 of 13 for a total of 30 yards and four interceptions.
Larney caught two passes for 24 yards. He also punted the ball seven times.
Jesse Zimmerman made one catch four four yards and Whitworth had one catch for two yards.
Defensively, Stephen McDonald made five unassisted tackles, two assisted tackles and made an interception. Zack Vaughn had three solo stops and one assisted tackle.
Jacob Rhoads and Kauth each had three unassisted tackles. Zach Crawford had two solo tackles, a quarterback sack and an assisted tackle.
Corey Taylor and Blake Appling each had a solo stop and two assisted tackles. Larney and Bryce Misenhelter each had an unassisted tackle.
Derrick Weir had an unassisted tackle, an assisted tackle and a quarterback sack. On the sack, Weir was injured — after a trip to the hospital in Chanute, Weir found out he had broken his right arm.
Last week at Columbus, sophomore quarterback Mason Coons suffered a broken growth plate in his foot.
