In Humboldt’s first six games, the Cubs outscored their opponents 112-15. The closest any of those six games ended up being was a 10-point win over Neodesha in the season opener.

So it stands to reason that eventually, someone would finally land a punch on the Cubs and then, for really the first time this season, they would have to punch back.

Thursday’s home series versus Fredonia  — which was originally scheduled to be a home game for the Yellowjackets before rained forced the move to the Cubs turf fields — provided just the area for Humboldt to show their resilience. The Cubs jumped out early  then got stagnant in a 10-2 win in game one before having to tough out a 3-2 win in game two to stay undefeated and get the sweep.

Junior Jackson Aikins got the start in game one and did well despite not having some of his best stuff.

He earned the win by allowing just two runs on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts. Kaiden Barnett came in in relief for the final three innings and allowed just two hits.

The Cubs jumped out to a 7-1 first inning lead and seemed poised to wrap the game up early when Fredonia changed their pitcher and halted the Cubs momentum.

The Yellowjackets scored a run in the top of the second but that would be it as Humboldt drove in a run in the third and then two more in the bottom of the sixth.

Gunner Elder and Joe Murrow each had two hits in game one and the Cubs had six total stolen bases.

Xavier Bauer got the start in game two a threw four one-hit, scoreless innings with four walks and three strikeouts.

Dagen Goodner and Barnett came in in the final three innings and each gave up a run (Goodner’s was unearned).

The Cubs took an early 3-0 lead after a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third. Fredonia poked in a run in the fifth and then another in the seventh but the tying run was left on second.

Goodner led the way at the plate with two hits and Taylor Lassman had a double.

Humboldt will try to keep their undefeated ways rolling versus Eureka at home on Monday.
