BURLINGTON — The Iola Fillies and Humboldt Cubs found themselves in the same pool on Saturday in the Burlington Varsity Volleyball Tournament.
The two Allen County teams dominated their competition in their pool play. They each swept St. Paul with Iola beating them 25-23 and 25-10 and Humboldt winning 25-10 and 25-8.
They each also knocked off Waverly.
Iola won the first set over Waverly, 25-22, but the Bulldogs responded in the second with a 25-10 victory. Iola was able to bounce back with a 25-21 third set victory to win the match.
Humboldt also won its first set against Waverly, winning 25-22. Waverly responded again with a 25-23 victory to take the second. Humboldt won the match by beating the Bulldogs 25-17.
The match-up of the day pitted the Fillies and Cubs against each other.
Iola won the first set 25-20 to grab control of the match early.
The Cubs bounced right back, however, and they won the second set 25-15.
In the third and decisive set, Humboldt was able to dominate and earn a 25-13 win.
Humboldt’s Lizzie Myers led the team with nine kills in the match. Aricah McCall added seven.
Annalise Whitcomb led her Cubs with 15 assists. Sydney Houk had a team-high four aces.
Both team’s advanced to the championship bracket with a chance to set-up a rematch for the tournament championship.
The Cubs knocked off Lebo by following the same formula that worked against Iola when they lost the first set, but respond with two straight wins, 25-15 and 25-21.
“The girls battled all day and I was very pleased with our play late in the day,” Humboldt coach Terry Meadows said. “We still have some moments when we let up a bit and let teams back in the game, but we are working on that.”
The Cubs finals opponent was not the Fillies, however.
Iola was knocked off by an old nemesis with Burlington sweeping them in straight sets, 25-12 and 25-15.
Iola fell in the third-place match in three sets to Lebo.
The Fillies lost the first set 25-15, but answered in the second with a 25-18 victory. They fell in the third match 25-11 and were forced to settle for a fourth-place finish on the day.
The Cubs also lost their final match of the day when they fell to Burlington 25-22 and 25-19 in the finals. The Cubs finished as the runner-up.
