The Humboldt boys dominated Tuesday night at their preseason tournament, blowing past Uniontown for a 51-17 win.
The win is Humboldts first of the season as they even out at 1-1 overall.
You didnt need to know much about either of these teams to know that Tuesday nights game was a mismatch. Most of the Cubs towered over Uniontown and a brief glance at the program showed Humboldt is heavy with juniors and seniors while the Eagles dont have a single senior and just two juniors on their entire roster.
We were bigger, faster and older, head coach David Taylor said. Im not trying to take anything away from Uniontown, but it was just a big mismatch.
Just minutes into the game, the Humboldt boys separated themselves and started building what nearly ended up being a 40-point lead by the time the final buzzer blew.
I thought we had good intensity the whole time, Taylor said. I was pleased, real pleased. Especially when we were running the floor and pushing the ball up with the pass like were supposed to. When we did that, I feel like we really got going.
The first quarter ended 18-6 in what later proved to be the Cubs most pedestrian quarter of the night. The second quarter was much more impressive.
The Cubs scored about the same, 17 instead of 18, but they held the Eagles to just two points throughout the quarter as their lead continued to balloon.
Humboldt ended the night with 16 steals in what was just a smothering effort.
In the third quarter, Humboldts lead got up to 30 and by then, the Cubs were on their second- and third-string players.
With a 49-13 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the running clock was initiated for the final eight minutes. Uniontown outscored the Cubs 4-2 to close the game out.
Even with their overwhelming performance, Taylor did see a few things that hes looking to work on before they play again.
Our defensive rotation needs some work, Taylor said. I thought our first and second rotation was really good but after that it wasnt near as good. We also didnt get our hands in the passing lanes as much as Id like. But its early. I do think we rebounded and hit our outlet passes well.
Senior Bo Bigelow led a very scattered scoring effort for Humboldt with 11 points. Senior Tucker Hurst and junior Conor Haviland each had nine, senior Caleb Coronado had six, senior Xavier Bauer had five, senior Taylor Lassman and junior Isiah Coronado each had four and senior Teryn Johnson had three.
The Cubs will take on Crest in the next round of their tournament on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
