The Humboldt boys track and field team relied on strong performances from its throwers to win the Iola Junior Varsity Invitational on Monday at Riverside Park.
The Cubs fielded three athletes to each win in the javelin, shot put and discus events.
Colton Riebel had a throw of 41’11” to win the shot put and Seth Hegwald took the javelin competition with a 142’ toss.
Tucker Hurst won a pair of events. He took the discus with a 122’15” and then won the triple jump with a 36’11”.
Caleb Coronado had the team’s other top finish and won the 800-meter run with a 2:22.51.
The Cub 4×800 relay team took first as well with Brady Slocum, Caleb Coronado, Isiah Coronado and Seth Barlow running a 9:53.
The Humboldt girls finished 11th as a team.
MARMATON VALLEY
The Wildcats were able to with the girls’ team title behind a perfect performance from freshman Bailey Griffith.
Griffith won the 100-meter dash with a 13.1, the 200-meter dash with a 26.93, the long jump with a 17’4.5” and the triple jump with a 35’9.5”.
Junior Shelby Yoho also added two individual titles by winning the 800-meter run with a 2:39.88 and the 3200-meter run with a 13:46.32.
On the boys’ side, Josh Wise won the long jump with a 88’5.5”.
The Wildcat boys finished in 11th place overall.
CREST
Lancer senior Laurel Godderz had a strong day as she prepares for regionals.
Godderz won both the javelin and the discus. In the discus, she threw a 91’4” and in the javelin, she had a 97’9”.
The Lancer girls finished in third place as a team.
On the boys’ side, freshman Billy Lyda returned to the Lancer lineup and made his presence known by winning both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.
Lyda ran the 100-meter dash in 11.26 and he ran the 200-meter dash in 22.72.
The Lancers finished in a tie for ninth in team points,
IOLA
The Fillies and Mustangs each tied for seventh in team points.
Freshman Elka Billings had a dominating win in the 1,600-meter run and won by over a minute with a 6:03.74.
Fellow-freshman Christine Helman flashed some more of the tremendous potential of the young Fillies by winning the shot put with a 29’9”.
On the boys’ side, junior Ethan Holloway picked up the team’s only individual championship by winning the high jump with a 5’6”.
UP NEXT
With the junior varsity season wrapped up, all of the area squads will look to their league meets on Thursday.
Iola will travel to Wellsville while Humboldt goes to Leon-Bluestem and Marmaton Valley and Crest will be at Northeast Arma.
