HUMBOLDT — A stout Eureka High Tornadoes team gave Humboldt High a run for its money — and a re-affirming win for the Cubs, who emerged with a 59-40 victory.
The win keeps Humboldt’s record perfect at 15-0.
“Eureka is a very good team, they’re very solid,” Humboldt coach David Taylor said.
Taylor was especially proud of his team’s defensive effort in the first half, in which they showed a good amount of focus. The Cubs held the Tornadoes to 13 points in the first two quarters, compared to Humboldt’s 31.
For the second half, the Cubs came out with a strong 17-point third quarter.
Taylor said it was essential to have a “good first three minutes of the third quarter,” and his team delivered.
The Tornadoes bounced back in the fourth with 18 points, but it was too little too late.
“We had a lot of guys in the scoring column,” Taylor said. “I’m very happy for the kids.”
Tanner McNutt led the way with 16 points, followed by Noah Thornbrugh with 13 and Nathan Whitcomb with eight. Hunter Murrow and Thornbrugh each had three steals. Trey Johnson contributed six assists. Whitcomb had four rebounds.
“Johnson did a good job passing the ball, he had some good looks inside,” Taylor said.
The Cubs travel to Caney Valley High Friday to face the Bullpups.
The Humboldt junior varsity squad won 49-26 in a two-quarter game. Kason Siemens led the scoring with 19 points.
