HUMBOLDT — Melissa Davidson decided to stay close to home and follow in the footsteps of former Humboldt High softball players.
Davidson, who is a 2011 Humboldt High graduate, signed early in the spring to play softball for Allen County Community College next year.
Davidson helped lead the Lady Cubs to the Kansas Class 2-1A state softball tournament this spring. She was 13-11 on the mound for the Lady Cubs.
But her pitching days are probably behind her.
Ed Wilkerson, ACCC head coach,  said the Red Devils are looking at Davidson as a position player, either in the outfield or infield.
Davidson played first base for Humboldt until this season when she was converted into a pitcher.
“Melissa is a good athlete  who has a lot of potential of becoming a better softball player,” said Wilkerson.
“Those are the types of high school players we’re looking for to come into our program and make it better as they develop into better players themselves.”
“I wanted to stay close to home and Allen County has the history of a good program,” Davidson said. “I’ve seen other Humboldt players go to ACCC and do well.”
Davidson earned 2011 All-Tri-Valley League first team softball honors.  She is the daughter of Becky and Alan Nettles of Humboldt.
Allen County has made it to the playoffs three straight years.
