Sophomore Filly Claudia Castellanos-Rodrigo drives through two Wellsville defenders in their home loss on Friday.

The Fillies knew it would be tough, but the talented one-loss Wellsville Lady Eagles found a way to surpass those expectations after dominating Iola at home 63-30.

The loss drops the Fillies to 4-4 and 2-2 in Pioneer League play.

“We’ve just got to shake that off and be ready for Monday,” head coach Becky Carlson said. “There’s nothing that we can do to fix that right now. So we’re just going to let this game go.”

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter but a 5-0 Filly run seemed to show that Iola was more than capable of digging in and fighting.

That faded soon after thanks to an 18-2 Wellsville run spurred by stellar shooting and a strong press defense that completely took Iola out of anything that the Fillies wanted to do all game long.

“That first half, they just didn’t miss, “ Carlson said. “They made a lot of shots and we didn’t rebound very well and that gave them extra looks.”

The Fillies trailed by 21 after the first quarter. The Fillies fared better in the second quarter, scoring the most of any quarter (10) while Wellsville was held to nearly half of what was scored in the first quarter (15).

Sophomore point guard Claudia Castellanos-Rodrigo, who more often than not found ways to make her way through Wellsville’s defense, facilitated much of the Fillies’ offense including six of senior Piper Moore’s team-high 10 points.

“I thought Claudia did a nice job taking care of the ball considering that there was a ton of pressure on her,“ Carlson said.

It was 43-17 at the half and it didn’t take long for the Lady Eagles to extend their lead to 30 which, once they arrived at the fourth quarter, activated the running clock.

The Lady Eagles cleared their bench with two minutes to play in the third quarter.

Senior Ellie Carson broke a seven-game double-digit scoring streak by notching six points. Castellanos-Rodrigo also scored six followed by five for senior Madisyn Holloway, and three for junior Kelsey Morrison.

The Fillies will head into tournament week next week. Iola is competing in the Wilson County Classic held at Neodesha High School.

The  Fillies will open things up versus Cherryvale at 3:15 p.m.

“I’m not sure how good the other teams are but I like where we’re seeded,” Carlson said. “I’m excited.”
