WELLSVILLE — Iola High’s softball team had a rough go of it Tuesday, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Wellsville, 17-2 and 16-1.
The losses drop the Fillies to 3-5 in Pioneer League play and 3-7 overall.
“Just a bad day,” Fillies head coach Vince Coons said.
Iola was limited to four hits in the opener, singles by Ashlie Shields, Shelby Reno, Halie Cleaver and Hannah Endicott.
Cleaver’s first-inning single actually gave the Fillies a quick 2-0 lead before the Eagles tied it in the bottom of the inning, then took the lead for good with a five-run second. Wellsville tacked on 10 in the bottom of the third — including a pair of grand-slam home runs — to win via run-rule.
Endicott pitched, giving up 10 hits and four walks. Mackenzie Weseloh also pitched, giving up four hits and two walks.
The struggles continued in the second game.
Wellsville broke open a 4-1 game with six runs in both the third and fourth innings, while Iola was limited to two hits.
Both hits came in the second inning. Reno singled and scored on Cleaver’s RBI single.
Weseloh gave up 11 hits and three walks.
The Fillies return to action Friday at Humboldt’s Lindsey Friederich Memorial Tournament. Iola is slated to take on Neodesha at 1:30 p.m. before facing host Humboldt at 3:15. Game times are approximate and will be dictated by the completion of earlier games.
