COLUMBUS — The Iola Fillies, a group of local second-graders, took home a basketball championship over the weekend.

At a tournament in Columbus, the squad went 1-1 in pool play, good for the second seed in the medal round.

There, the Fillies defeated Webb City to earn a berth in the championship. Iola defeated Columbus 12-9 to bring in the trophy.

Coach Kelci Sigg noted the lack of competition for this age group. “So when we saw Columbus was hosting one, we jumped at the opportunity,” she said. “We found seven girls eager to play and quickly formed a team.”

Turns out the team members are quite competitive, Sigg said.

“Wow, did they want those first-place medals,” she said. “These girls are going to be so fun to watch as they grow up.”

Sigg coaches the team along with husband, John Sigg, and Brandon Hesse.
