HUMBOLDT — A two-point first quarter meant the Humboldt Lady Cubs had to play catchup for the next three. While the Lady Cubs punched back, Uniontown stood firm to hold onto a 38-33 victory Tuesday night.

Humboldt started slow offensively, and it didn’t help that senior Winter Snyder faced foul trouble early on. The Lady Cubs didn’t score their first bucket until Jessica Myers found the bottom of the net with a 15-foot jumper from the corner.

“We weren’t running our offense,” head coach Aubree Jones said. “We just came out and looked kind of intimidated, and didn’t get in our groove in the first quarter. With two points in the first quarter, you can’t win with that, and you can’t win if you don’t take care of the ball either.”

Both teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter as the Lady Cubs started to find their footing offensively. The Cubs brought the score within three with three minutes remaining in the second, but a 6-1 Uniontown run to close the quarter put Humboldt down 20-12 at the half.

Snyder started the third quarter with a 3-pointer to inch Humboldt back into the game. Junior Jada Dangerfield’s bucket evened the score at 24-24 halfway through the third, and Myers handed Humboldt the two-point lead moments later. Snyder finished as Humboldt’s leading scorer with 12 points, but missed the final minutes of the game after collecting her fifth foul.

“Despite Winter being in foul trouble, she played great for us,” Jones said. “She hit some big shots, and really did some things we needed her to do. We missed her last game, so it was nice seeing her come back to how we are used to her playing.”

The Eagles responded with a 7-0 run that started in the third quarter, and continued through the fourth to retake the lead, but Humboldt responded with a run of their own. Another trey from Snyder capped off a 6-0 Lady Cub run to bring the deficit down to 33-32.

Seconds later, Kirstyn Murrow evened the score after converting one of two free throw attempts, but Uniontown responded to push the lead back to three. Humboldt was unable to find a basket in the final three minutes, resulting in the 38-33 defeat.

The Lady Cubs have two matches remaining in the Annual Emprise Bank Basketball Tournament. Humboldt will face Crest on Thursday and Erie on Friday. The games tip-off around 7 p.m.
