INDEPENDENCE — A few bad breaks were costly for Iola High golfers Shane Walden and Kaden Macha.
Both were within an eyelash of winning the Pittsburg Invitational at Crestwood Country Club Tuesday.
“But Shane left some shots out there,” Iola coach Doug Kerr said. “He didn’t putt very well.”
And Macha saw one errant shot hit a cart path and bounce out of bounds on his final hole of the day.
Walden shot a 79, which put him in second place overall, one stroke behind Labette County’s Galvin Darkis.
Macha’s out-of-bounds shot led to an 82, which relegated him to seventh.
“We had some bad luck, but that was probably the best we’ve played this season,” Kerr said.
The Mustangs shot 337 as a team, 17 strokes behind Labette County’s 320. Independence was third at 342.
Drake Dieker carded an 84, while Matt Jacobs and Adam Peterson both shot a 92.
“Matt Jacobs deserves some recognition for his round,” Kerr said. “He cut eight strokes off of his previous best round.”
Jacobs also shot better at Pittsburg than he did at Iola’s home meet a week ago, “even though this was probably a tougher course,” Kerr said. “He did well.
Weather permitting, Iola will travel to Parsons Thursday.
Iola’s individual results follow.
