HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Cubs wowed their home crowd with a 42-0 victory over the Eureka Tornadoes for Friday’s home opener.
With Humboldt’s defense posting their first goose egg of the season, the Cubs’ offense could be a bit more conservative with a rushing attack which racked up nearly 300 yards on the ground.
Junior quarterback Ty Shaughnessy accounted for more than a third of Humboldt’s 363 yards of total offense. He was the night’s leading rusher with 143 yards on 11 carries, including two touchdowns.
Shaughnessy also completed 4 of 9 passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns.Also blazing a path to the goalposts were:
Sophomore running back Mason Miller who averaged 11.3 yards per carry for 102 yards and a touchdown;
Senior Broc Ivy averaged seven yards per carry for 35 yards as well as a pair of catches for 29 yards and a 17-yard touchdown; and
Junior receiver Kolton Hanson reached the end zone on his only reception of the night when Shaughnessy hit him on a 29-yarder for pay dirt.
Ivy also shined on defense and was a tackle shy of tying junior linebacker Owen Sicka’s eight ball carries.
Sophomore defensive lineman Tucker Wrestler and Shaughnessy had five tackles each. Sophomore defensive back Riley Lassman and Miller each had an interception.
What’s next?
With the win, the Cubs remain 2-0 overall and in the Tri-Valley League.
The Cubs prepare for their biggest test of the season so far this week with the returning Tri-Valley League champion on the schedule for a road game Friday.
The Caney Valley Bullpups are 2-0 this season and have not been scored on yet after trouncing Eureka 58-0 in the opener, then thrashing Fredonia 55-0 Friday.
Kickoff for Friday’s game is at 7 p.m.
