Shaughnessy one-hits Fredonia

The headline may be a bit misleader, because Shaughnesssy's performance on the mound was not even Humboldt's best that day.

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Cubs strategy during a three-game week proved successful after picking up a pair of wins against Tri-Valley foe Fredonia 3-1 and 10-0.

Sophomore pitcher Ty Shaughnessy set a dominating tone in the opener with a 15-strikeout performance while en route to the win — allowing just one hit and one run.

With Shaughnessy having a career night, Humboldt only needed a handful of timely hits to pick up the win. Shaughnessy put the Cubs on the scoreboard with an RBI grounder in the opening frame, then a bases-loaded walk added another run and an RBI single in the fifth inning by sophomore designated hitter Kolton Hanson wrapped up the Cubs scoring in the opener.

Junior shortstop Gavin Gunderman had a team-leading two hits while successful in 2 of 3 at-bats. Hanson and freshman third baseman Tucker Wrestler had one hit each.

Gunderman threw a no-hitter in the finale of Thursday’s doubleheader. He posted seven strikeouts over five innings after a four-run fourth inning halted the contest in the fifth inning.

A pair of three-run innings in the first and third put Humboldt up early as they cruised to victory on Gunderman’s arm. Shaughnessy tied senior outfielder Grady Elder for the team lead in hits with two each. Shaughnessy had two RBIs and Elder had one.

With the win, the Cubs improved their record to 5-4 overall and 5-12 in the TVL. They return to the diamond Tuesday while hosting Eureka. First pitch for the opener is set for 4:30 p.m.
