HUMBOLDT — The 2A Humboldt Lady Cubs slayed a giant Thursday while stepping up to sweep 4A Burlington, 11-1 and 11-3, picking up their second-consecutive sweep in the season.
Humboldt pounded Burlington from their first at-bat with three runs in the first inning, then six runs in the second. After adding a pair of runs in the third inning, junior pitcher Jo Ellison maintained control on the mound with three straight scoreless innings before forcing a mercy-rule in the sixth inning.
Ellison ended the night with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort while allowing one run on two hits and four walks. Senior shortstop Laney Hull, junior catcher Leah Carman and junior outfielder Carlie Weilert tied for the team lead in RBIs with two each. Hall and Carman also tied for the team lead in hits with two each.
Burlington made it through the seventh inning in the nightcap, but another multiple RBI performance by Weilert, Hull and Carman kept the Wildcats at a distance. As freshman starting pitcher Jadey Ellis kept Burlington scoreless through the third inning, the Lady Cubs methodically took control with a pair of runs in the first, second and third inning, then exploded with four runs in the fourth.
Weilert had a team-leading three RBIs, followed by Hull and Carman with two each. Hill junior outfielder Lakyn Meadows and Weilert tied for the team lead in hits with three each.
Thursday’s sweep put the Lady Cubs above .500 overall with a record of 5-4. They return to the diamond Tuesday, when they host TVL foe Caney Valley Lady Bullpups. First pitch for the opener is at 4:30 p.m. with a 6 p.m. second pitch tentatively scheduled for the nightcap.
