Humboldt boys and girls open Pleasanton tournament with wins

PLEASANTON — Humboldt High’s girls continued their winning ways Tuesday, defeating Oswego 46-30 in the opening round of the Pleasanton Midseason Tournament.

The victory is the Lady Cubs’ fourth in a row and lifts Humboldt to 5-4 on the season.

Humboldt led 23-9 at halftime, relying on its patented ferocious defense to take the lead.

Still, Humboldt had to overcome a huge disparity in fouls, having been whistled for 10 in the first half, 13 in the second.

Oswego hit 16 of 25 free throws, compared to just seven field goals.

On the other end of the court, Oswego was whistled for six personal fouls in the contest, two in the second. Humboldt attempted only two free throws in the contest. Jessica Myers hit 1 of 2 from the stripe with 13.3 seconds left in the game.

Maggie Johnson led the way, draining five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 17 points, to go with six rebounds. Aricah McCall followed with 14 points and seven boards.

Other contributors: Winter Snyder, two points, six rebounds; Morgan Mauk, two points, four rebounds; Myers, one point and one rebound; Emma Johnson, four rebounds; Madi White, two points; Kaylie Johnson, four points and three rebounds; Alayna Johnson, four points and four rebounds; and Jada Dangerfield, seven rebounds.

The fifth-seeded Lady Cubs advance to the semifinals to take on top seed Heritage Christian, which defeated Altoona-Midway 44-24. The winner advances to Friday’s championship contest at 7 p.m. The loser drops to the third-place game, also at 7 Friday.

 

THE HUMBOLDT boys also prevailed in their tournament opener, cruising past Oswego, 73-41.

The Cubs shot a scorching 56 percent from the field and took control in the second and third quarters. Humboldt outscored Oswego 43-18 to break open what had been a 15-15 deadlock.

A trio of Humboldt players reached double figures, led by Conor Haviland’s 14 points and 10 rebounds. Caleb Coronado followed with 13 points and six boards. Tucker Hurst chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds. Teryn Johnson dished out five assists, followed by Haviland, Coronado and Bo Bigelow with four each. Coronado also had three steals and two blocks. Hurst and Josh Hull each had two blocks as well.

The second-seeded Cubs (6-3) advance to take on Osawatomie, which defeated Altoona-Midway, 65-34, at 4 p.m. Thursday. Win or lose, Humboldt will then play at 8:30 p.m. Friday in either the championship or third-place game.

 

MARMATON Valley’s squads weren’t as fortunate in their openers.

The Wildcat boys, seeded fourth, fell to fifth seed Heritage Christian, 67-31. The Wildcats will take on Uniontown, which fell to top seed Pleasanton, 56-26, at 7 p.m. Thursday. Marmaton Valley will then play in either the fifth or seventh-place game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Marmaton Valley’s girls, seeded seventh, fell to second-seeded Pleasanton, 33-16. They will play Uniontown at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. They’ll play at 4 p.m. Friday in either the fifth- or seventh-place contest.

Statistics were unavailable for the Wildcat contests.
