Basketball may be an indoor sport but the recent winter weather has had a big effect on one of the more busier weeks of the season — mid-season tournament week.
Snow, ice, and extreme cold led to school closures across the area today thus canceling the opening date of several area tournaments.
Below are the various cancellations for area schools along with the dates that they’ve been rescheduled as of press time:
— The Burlington Invitational Tournament scheduled to begin today will start Wednesday. The Iola girls and boys tip-off respectively at 3:30 p.m. and 5:05 p.m. versus Sabetha. The games will still be played at Burlington Middle School as originally planned.
— The Pleasanton Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament will host both Humboldt and Marmaton Valley. The opening round for the Cubs against Altoona-Midway will begin at 4 p.m. (boys) and 5:30 p.m. (girls) Wednesday in the south gym. The Marmaton Valley girls will play Uniontown at 4 p.m. and the boys will play Osawatomie at 7 p.m.
— The Yates Center boys and girls were set to compete in the opening round of the Wilson County Classic Monday evening before it was rescheduled for tonight. Due to the continued bad weather, host Fredonia canceled school today thus leading tournament organizers to reschedule again. As of this morning, an official date has yet to be set.
— Crest is the lone area team competing in the Tony Dubray Classic in Liberal, Mo. Play was supposed to start tonight. As of this morning, an official start date has yet to be set.
— Southern Coffey County was scheduled to host Lebo tonight but had to postpone due to canceling school. The Titans will either make-up the game on Thursday or Friday.
— Iola Middle School’s matchup with Wellsville was canceled and will be made up at a later date.
— Humboldt Middle School’s home game versus Cherryvale set for Monday has not been rescheduled.
— Humboldt Middle School’s home game versus Cherryvale on Monday was canceled and a makeup date has not been set.
