Iola Blue and Gold wins two to open spring soccer run

Iola Blue and Gold opened the 2012 spring club soccer season with two home victories. The Iola Soccer Club’s 14-and-under team edged Coffeyville 4-3 on April 15 then sent Chanute packing with a 7-1 win Sunday.

Iola Blue and Gold plays in the SEK Recreational Soccer League.

Against Coffeyville, Zach St. Clair led Iola with two goals. Colby Works and Devan Herfurth each had a goal. Iola led 2-1 at halftime.

Nolan Jones was credited with two assists and Braden Plumlee had one assist. Mason Key had five saves in goal and Braden Plumlee made four goalie saves.

In the Chanute game, Iola Blue and Gold worked out to a 3-1 halftime lead. The squad outscored Chanute 4-0 in the second half.

Works and Isaih Shaughnessy each booted in two goals for Iola. Herfurth had a goal and an assist. Mason Snavely and Bret Plumlee had a goal apiece. Collin Bedell and Braden Plumlee were each credited with an assist.

In goal, Key made four saves and St. Clair had two saves.

Iola Blue and Gold (2-0) plays at Coffeyville Sunday at 4 p.m. Its next home game is May 6 against Independence. The teams play at 4 p.m. on Iola’s Davis Athletic Fields, just north of Riverside Park.
