The junior varsity tennis team ended its season on Monday in Chanute.
The team, made up mostly of first-year tennis players, has had its growing pains this season and Monday night wasn’t any different as the girls walked away with just two wins.
Number one singles player Claudia Castellanos was one of the Fillies to come away with a win, losing to Marcy Brown of Pittsburg 6-1 and Emma Daly of Fort Scott 6-4 before grabbing her first win of the season over Coffeyville’s Hannah Samples in a 6-5 match with an 11-9 tiebreaker.
Castellanos is a foreign exchange student from Spain and has been able to practice only over the past several weeks. Head coach Jennifer Bycroft said she was extremely pleased that Castellanos was able to get her first win before the season ended.
“I was so excited for her to be able to win a match tonight, especially considering the win came in such a hardfought tiebreaker,” Bycroft said. “She was pretty happy too.”
The number two doubles team of Allie Fager and Miah Shelby secured the day’s other win.
The team lost to Chanute 6-1 and Pittsburg 6-1 before getting a 6-0 win over Coffeyville.
The number one doubles team of Annika Hobbs and Yuritzi Saavedra lost to Independence 6-1, Labette County 6-5 with a 7-5 tiebreaker and Fort Scott 6-3.
Number two singles player Jessica Tidd lost to Pittsburg’s Sariah Perez 6-1, Labette County’s Bradie Johnson 6-4 and Parsons’ Alix Webb 6-2.
The varsity Fillies traveled to Pittsburg on Tuesday for their final meet of the season and finished third. They’ll head to regionals in Independence a week from Saturday.
