GARNETT — Iola Middle School’s volleyball teams had a successful season-opener Thursday, winning three of the four matches against host Anderson County.
And even in their sole loss, the eighth-grade A team mounted a ferocious comeback that came up just short.
“I’m so excited to see what the season has in store for these girls,” eighth-grade head coach Aubrey Westhoff said. “All the improvements they have made from last season to now is amazing.”
The eighth-grade A-team rattled off 10 straight points in the third and final set against Anderson County, but still fell short in a 25-20, 25-13 and 26-24 setback.
Moira Springer, who served up the 10 straight points in the finale, tied with Cora Boren with two aces apiece. Springer also had 11 passes. Keira Goranson added nine passes.
The Mustang eight-grade B-team squad delivered a hard-fought 25-13, 19-25, 25-17 and 22-20 victory.
Trinity Olive was a serving machine, delivering 10 aces. Gabriela Guerrero-Geisler and Kori Winslow added three aces each. Winslow, Willow Cremmer and London Hutton each had seven passes.
“The girls did an amazing job working together and getting the win,” Westhoff said.
In seventh-grade action, Iola’s A and B teams each brought home 3-1 victories. Individual statistics were not immediately available.
