Iola tennis wrapped up their regular season Tuesday night in Pittsburg.

Despite the fact that their final set of matches versus Chanute were canceled due to rain, the Fillies finished third overall. Even with that, head coach Jennifer Bycroft felt that her team didn’t quite play up to their potential.

“We really needed to play those heading into regionals,” Bycroft said. “Though our team finished third, we struggled some.”

Junior number one singles player Allie Utley went 2-1 starting with an 8-4 win over Parsons’ Kelsey Smith and an 8-1 win over St. Marys-Colgan’s Sara Perez before falling 8-1 to Pittsburg’s Konopelko.

Number two singles player Jennifer Tidd lost to Parsons’ Xzavea Wommack 8-1 before grabbing an 8-2 win over Colgan’s Sophia Shope. Tidd ended the night with an 8-2 loss to Pittsburg’s Marci Brown.

The number two doubles team of Kassy and Sidney Shelby also went 1-2, dropping games to Parsons 8-2 and Colgan 8-3 before turning in one of their better performances of the season with an 8-4 win over Pittsburg.

“It was probably the best I’ve seen them play all season,” Bycroft said. “They did a great job and they hustled like they always do.”

The number one doubles team of Gabby Richards and Carlie Payne struggled uncharacteristically, dropping all three of their matches.

They lost 8-3 to Parsons, 8-7 with three tie-break points to Colgan and 8-2 to Pittsburg.

The Fillies have a week to regroup before traveling to Independence next Saturday for regionals.
