Iola third at Pioneer League

With regionals just around the corner, male and female Iola High School athletes proved they are not to be overlooked as they prepare to make their bids to state next week.

Iola junior Keegen Hill competes in Iola earlier this year. Hill took first in the 800 and 1600-meter run Thursday at the Pioneer League meet in Wellsville.

Benefiting from strong individual and team performances, the Iola Mustangs took third at Thursday’s Pioneer League meet in Wellsville while their female counterparts took seventh.

The Mustangs took second in the 800-meter relay, completing the eight laps in 8:46.35. Iola also took second in the 400-meter relay in 3:44.06 and fifth in the 100-meter relay in 46.37 seconds.

Individually, junior distance runner Keegan Hill proved he has plenty left in the tank ahead of the regional meet with a first-place finish in the 1600-meter with a time of 4:47.47. Hill also took first in the 800-meter run in 2:09.25, followed by fifth-place junior Jakolby Hill (2:20.29) and sixth-place sophomore James Hunt (2:24.16).

In other individual performances, freshman Kevon Loving had a breakthrough day in the long jump after taking second place with a mark of 18 feet and 9.5 inches. Senior Cortland Carson posted a time of 44.5 seconds for second in the 310-hurdles. Distance runners sophomore Joshua Wanker and senior Kale Godfrey took fourth and fifth respectively in the 3200-run with Wanker finishing 2 seconds ahead of Godfrey.

As for the girls, they finished fourth in the 800-meter relay. Individually, junior Mahailie Genoble took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.83 seconds. Junior thrower Bethany Miller posted a fifth-place finish in shot put with a mark of 31-feet 31.5 inches and 10th in discus with an 83-feet 3-inch mark. Freshman Ari Ramirez showed out with a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run (3:05.9) and ninth in 100-meter dash (14.25 seconds).

300 hurdles: 2. Mahailie Genoble, 48.83 seconds.

100-meter dash: 9. Ramirez, 14.25 seconds.

800-meter run: 5. Ramirez, 3:05.9.
