GARNETT — The Iola Middle School Mustangs saved their best for last while wrapping up the season at last Thursday’s Pioneer League Junior High School Championship.

The seventh-grade Mustangs walked away as Pioneer League champions while their eighth-grade counterparts were just a half point from a league title. The Iola girls seventh- and eighth-graders finished in third place but not without a few astounding team and individual performances.

The boys eighth-grade 4×400 relay team broke a 23-year-old school record when Jayson Dorius, Chance Conley, Milo Franklin and Jaxen Mueller broke the 5-minute mark by nearly 30 seconds after completing their run in 4:33.12. On hand for the feat was Josh Mueller, Jaxen’s father, who ran  on the team in 2003 that held the previous record.

The Mustangs’ eighth grade 4×100 team, including Mueller, Cade Curry, Dorius, and Franklin also took first place. Franklin also took first in the 100-meter dash. Ty Thomas took first in the shot put and second in shot put.

In seventh-grade action, Elijah Irby was a one-man wrecking crew with first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and first in the long jump after nearly breaking the school record with a 19’ 1” leap.

In girls action, eighth-grader Moriah Mathis took first in the 3200-meter run and the first-place 4×400 relay team, including Ember Friend, London Hutton, Mariah Mathis and Chloe Foshag. The seventh-grade girls also posted a few first-place finishes.
