Iola volleyball takes second

BURLINGTON — Iola High’s volleyball team placed second at the Burlington Invitation on Saturday. The Fillies went undefeated in pool play.
“I was proud of how the girls focused on playing at our level of play and never let down,” coach Emily Sigg said.
Iola defeated Humboldt 25-17 and 25-7 in the first match. Addie Haar had two aces and three kills. Emery Driskel had two aces and 11 kills. Emma Piazza had an ace, two kills and 11 assists. Kyra Moore had an ace, two kills and six assists. Mikaela Platt had two aces and one kill. Sydney Wade had two kills. Toni Macha had an ace.
The Filles then beat Southern Coffey County 25-10 and 25-9. Haar had two aces and three kills. Driskel scored eight kills and six aces. Piazza had two aces and seven assists. Moore had three kills and five assists. Platt had two kills and Wade had a kill. Macha had an ace.
Iola finished pool play with a 28-26 and 25-15 win against Waverly. Haar had eight kills. Driskel hit 10 kills and two aces. Piazza had five kills and seven assists. Moore had 10 assists and two kills. Platt had a kill.
“We lost to Waverly in the first tournament of the year and came out and beat them in two sets to win our pool,” Sigg said. “They are a really great team with some powerhouse players and we shut them down quickly.”
In the semifinals, Iola beat St. Paul 25-22 and 25-15. Haar had an ace and six kills. Driskel had eight kills and three aces. Piazza had a kill and eight assists. Moore had an ace, four kills and seven assists. Platt had a kill.
Burlington won the championship against Iola 25-22 and 28-26. Haar had three kills. Driskel had an ace and four kills. Piazza had four kills and four assists. Moore had two kills and six assists. Platt had a kill.
“In the championship match there were just a lot of things that didn’t go in our favor,” Sigg said. “The last two years we wouldn’t have known how to handle a championship match and now that we’ve played in — and lost our second of the season — we are prepared and ready to win the next one we play.”

HUMBOLDT HIGH’S volleyball team didn’t get out of pool play at the Burlington Invitational. The Lady Cubs went 1-2 on the day.
In the team’s first match, Iola beat the Lady Cubs 25-17 and 25-7.
“We played very poorly in this match,” coach Stephanie Splechter said. “We never got anything going and played on our heels the whole time.”
Breanna Kline had two aces, four kills and three digs. Makaylah McCall had an ace, a kill and two digs. Brook Turner had two kills and two digs. Tiler Wells had an ace, one kill and six digs. Annalise Whitcomb had an ace, seven assists and five digs. Megan Hudlin and Delaney Umholtz each had four digs.
Humboldt lost the next match in three sets to Waverly 25-22, 21-25 and 25-17.
“We bounced back in this match and gave Waverly everything we had,” said Splechter. “It was a good match.”
Kline had two aces, seven kills and five digs. McCall had nine kills and two digs. Turner had an ace and six digs. Umholtz had five aces and eight digs. Wells had a kill and two digs. Whitcomb had 17 assists and a dig. Hudlin had seven digs.
The Lady Cubs ended the tournament with a win against Southern Coffey County 25-18 and 25-10.
“It was good to end the day on a win,” Splechter said. “The girls played solid and never let up.”
Hudlin had two aces and a dig. Kline had an ace, six kills, two assists and four digs. McCall had four kills. Turner had three kills, an ace and two digs. Umholtz had an ace and a dig. Wells had an ace. Whitcomb had four kills, 11 assists and four digs.
