College Basketball: Kansas Jayahawks
LAWRENCE, Kan. (TNS) Kansas guard Lagerald Vick will forgo his senior season to pursue professional basketball, he said Friday.
Vick averaged 12.1 points and 4.8 rebounds for the Jayhawks last season while earning All-Big 12 honorable mention honors.
I believe the time is right for him to move on, explore his options as a professional and see what develops, KU coach Bill Self said in a statement. We won a lot of games with Lagerald over the last three years and appreciate everything hes done for Kansas and our basketball program. We are 100 percent supportive of his decision and wish him the very best in whatever path this takes him.
Known for his athleticism, Vick was inconsistent for much of the season, with Self trying different motivational techniques with him.
Some of Vicks best basketball came late, though, as he averaged 13.5 points in KUs first four NCAA Tournament games.
It is now time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life, Vick said. I am declaring for the 2018 NBA draft and do not plan to hire an agent at this moment.
Vicks mother, La La Vick, confirmed to The Star in a phone conversation Friday that her sons pro decision was 100 percent. When asked about her son not hiring an agent at this time, La La Vick said, Well worry about that later.
La La Vick said her son had thoughts of going pro after this season even before the year began, in part because he wants to help support his daughter.
I think his decision is a good one, La La Vick said. Its what he wants to do.
Vicks departure puts KU at one under the maximum of 13 scholarships for next season. The Jayhawks are still in pursuit of the top unsigned guard Romeo Langford, who is considering KU, Vanderbilt and Indiana.
