The Iola High School junior varsity tennis team picked up a few wins at the Independence Invitational Monday.
The Mustangs took fifth place.
In singles action, Payton Kern opened the tournament with a 6-0 win over Pittsburg’s Nick Goris. He fell to David Mitchell of Independence 6-4, but rebounded with a 6-0 over Neodesha’s Landon Howell for third place.
In doubles action, Zachary Pfaff joined Daegon McDonald of Neodesha to briefly form a composite team.
The Blue-Stangs or Mustang-Streaks opened the tournament with a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburg pairing of Jacob Berger and Wesley Hays, then fell to Logan Peschka and JD Woodburn. Pfaff and McDonald ended the day with 6-4, 6-2 losses to Brennen Westervelt and Jarvis Harris of Coffeyville and J’Vonte White and Lauklon Roebuck of Neodesha respectively.
