CHERRYVALE — Some offensive fireworks helped Humboldt High head coach Brad Piley reach an impressive milestone Tuesday.
The Lady Cubs scored early and often in a doubleheader sweep of host Cherryvale, winning 12-1 and 18-0.
In so doing, Humboldt also gave Coach Piley his 300th career victory.
“I want to thank all the girls who have played for me,” said Piley, whose career mark stands at 300-61.
Lady Cub senior Kirstyn Murrow was a key protagonist in both outings. She blasted a first-inning grand slam in the opener as Humboldt scored nine in the top of the first inning.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn Ellis shut down Cherryvale’s lineup, allowing three hits over five innings, with five strikeouts.
Murrow’s grand slam was part of a five-RBI day. She also stole a base and scored twice. Emily Ross had a home run, along with a double, an RBI and a run. Ellis aided her own cause with three singles, two RBIs and a run. Carsyn Haviland singled three times, stole a base, scored twice and drove in two. Shelby Shaughnessy had two singles and two runs. Karley Wools stole a base and scored a run, Laken Hunter had a stolen base, run and RBI, while Morgan Sterling and Anna Heisler each had a run.
“Brooklyn had a great night on the mound,” Piley said.
Murrow gave Humboldt another charge in the nightcap, hitting a leadoff home run.
Humboldt did the bulk of its damage in the second inning, scoring 11, before tacking on five more in the fourth.
Murrow added a single and double, while driving in four and scoring three runs. Wools, who had two singles, a double, two stolen bases, two runs and two RBIs, also handled the pitching duties. She scattered five hits over five innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Ross singled and doubled with two RBIs. Shaughnessy had two singles, a stolen base, a run and two RBIs. Hunter had a double, stolen base, RBI and two runs. Chloe Daniels scored three times with a stolen base, Sterling drove in two with a stolen base and three runs. Heisler scored twice; Haviland once.
