NEODESHA — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs opened defense of their Tri-Valley League title with a split against hosting Neodesha High’s Bluestreaks Tuesday.
After winning the first game 8-7, the Lady Cubs dropped an 8-6 decision to Neodesha.
“All my girls are playing in new positions this year and they got better last night,” said Brad Piley, Lady Cub head coach, who was the Kansas Softball Coaches’ Class 2-1A coach of the year for 2009.
Melissa Davidson pitched both games for Humboldt. She gave up five hits, walked six and struck out seven in the win. In the second game, Davidson walked seven, hit three batters, surrendered four hits. She struck out five.
“Melissa pitched fine but got a little tired. She will get stronger the more she pitches,” Piley said. “Hannah McCall and Taylyn Wells made some great defensive plays for us.”
McCall, Taylor Fitzmaurice and Kindahl Young each had two singles in the first game. A five-run third helped propel the Lady Cubs to victory.
Davidson and Kylee Carson had a double apiece. Wells, Hannah Fiene and Amanda Maxton each had a single.
Wells had three singles and five stolen bases in the second game. McCall had two singles. Kylee Carson had a double and a single. Fiene singled.
No report was made on Humboldt baseball.
Humboldt teams travel to Erie Thursday.
