Lady Cubs take 4th at Burlington

After a week away from the hardwood, the Humboldt Lady Cubs returned home with a fourth-place plaque after competing at Saturday's Burlington High School Varsity Volleyball Tournament.

The Humboldt Lady Cubs returned home with their second consecutive tournament trophy after taking fourth at the Burlington High School tournament over the weekend.

In pool play, Humboldt defeated Iola and Fredonia, but the Cubs then fell to Burlington in straight sets. The Cubs also lost the semifinal game to Lyndon before bowing out of the tournament with fourth place after a straight-set loss to Baxter Springs.

The Lady Cubs opened the day with a 25-19, 25-6 victory over Fredonia. Senior outside hitter Ricklyn Hillmon had a team-leading eight kills, followed by junior outside hitter Lakyn Meadows and senior setter Laney Hull with six each. Senior libero Skylar Hottenstein had a team-leading seven aces, followed by Meadows and Hull with two each. Defensively, Hottenstein tied Meadows with six digs each, followed by Hull and sophomore setter Bailey Daniels with four each.

Humboldt fell to Burlington in the first set 25-10, but roared back to make a game of it in the second with a 25-23 loss. Hillmon had a team-leading six kills, followed by Meadows with four. Hull, sophomore outside hitter Adalyn Hillmon and Meadows tied in aces with one each. On defense, Hottenstein had a team-leading 13 digs, followed by Hill and Meadows with nine and eight respectively.

The Lady Cubs picked up their final victory of the day in pool play action with a 25-20, 25-21 win over Iola. Hillmon had a team-leading eight kills, followed by Hull with five. Humboldt players tied for the team lead in aces with two each and only a single pass separated Hull, Hottenstein and Daniels from the team lead in digs with 8, 7, and 6 pulled up respectively.

THE IOLA MUSTANGS went 2-3 on the day but did not place. They opened the tournament with a 25-8, 25-17 sweep of McLouth, then fell to Burlington in two sets, 25-10 and 25-12. Iola then defeated Fredonia in three sets. They lost the first set 25-23 but took the next two 25-21 and 26-24.

Iola then fell in their next two matches, 25-20, 25-21, to Humboldt, and then 25-19 and 25-16 to Oswego. 

Following the weekend action, Iola fell to 4-15 overall, while Humboldt is 17-7 overall. Humboldt returns to the hardwood Thursday for a triangular in St. Paul. The Mustangs return Tuesday for a triangular at Prairie View.
