With the prospect of going winless in Jayhawk Conference play for the third season in a row staring them down, the Allen Community College volleyball team did their best to try to buck the trend at home Wednesday evening versus Fort Scott.
The Lady Devil gym had a festive atmosphere thanks in part to their Dig Pink night which was held to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The crowd and coaches wore pink along with the team that had special pink uniforms for the occasion.
Unfortunately, it wouldnt be enough as the Lady Devils succumbed in three sets to a Fort Scott team thats receiving votes in the NJCAA poll.
The Lady Devils have been swept in every conference match this season.
Allen County will now go into the 2019 season looking for their first conference victory since beating Dodge City at home on Sept. 19, 2015.
The first two sets were very similar. The Lady Devils held tight for the first 10 to 15 points before Fort Scott ran away with it.
The Lady Devils only trailed 12-8 in set one but a 5-1 run turned that into 17-9 deficit on their way to a 25-16 set one loss.
In set two, the Lady Devils actually took a lead midway through the set 9-8 but it didnt last for long.
Fort Scott regained control of the match at 16-13 forcing the Lady Devils to call their second timeout of the set. Unfortunately for ACC, that did not deter the Greyhounds a bit and they ran away with the match on a 9-2 run to take the second set at 25-15.
In set three, Fort Scott grabbed a big lead early and held it despite a little run at the end of the set that got the Lady Devils back within single digits at 23-15.
The Greyhounds closed out the final couple of points and took set three and the match 25-16.
Freshman Celymar Cabranes had a team-high seven kills to go along with eight digs, two aces and a block. Fellow freshman Gabby Perez also had seven kills.
THE MATCH also featured the final Allen County appearance of Humboldt grad Annalise Whitcomb who is wrapping up her sophomore year at Fort Scott.
Whitcomb, a setter, comes off the bench for the Greyhounds and averages a little more than five assists per set.
