High School Football: Blue Devils 66, Wildcats 30

SEDAN — First the bad news.

Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats got off to a brutal start Friday against host Sedan.

The Wildcats surrendered a long touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, then saw the Blue Devils return both a punt and an interception return for touchdowns.

By the time the dust settled, Marmaton Valley was on the short end of a 66-30 setback to fall to 0-3 on the season.

But here’s the good news.

The first three weeks of the season don’t mean a lick, with district play beginning next week.

District play determines each school’s seeding for the new playoff format.

“We’re looking forward to starting districts next week, and hope to continue improving,” Wildcat head coach Gavin Cole said.

If Friday was any indication, the Wildcats are taking steps in the right direction.

“We didn’t play with energy early on,” Cole said, “but we played much better the rest of the game.”

Caiden Elliott rushed 23 times for 77 yards and went 3 of 8 passing for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Wesley Lowder added 12 carries for 75 yards. William Lowder had 30 yards on two receptions with a touchdown and 19 yards on the ground and a score. Gage Griffith pulled in two receptions covering 65 yards and a touchdown, rushed for eight yards and a score and completed 2 of 6 passes for 25 yards. Anthony Bottini chipped in with a 20-yard reception.

District play begins next Friday for Marmaton Valley at Southern Coffey County.
