It seems like the season just started and now we’re looking at mid-season basketball tournaments. Five of the seven area schools are involved in tournaments next week.
Southern Coffey County High’s teams play in the Lyon County League tournament, Jan. 24-28 in Emporia. Yates Center High’s teams are not in a tournament and play regular season non-league games next Thursday.
Iola High’s Fillies and Mustangs are in the 2011 Burlington High Invitational at Burlington. Opening-round games are Tuesday followed by games Friday and Saturday.
The Fillies (5-3) are seeded No. 4 in the girls’ division. The Mustangs (0-8) are the eighth seed.
At Burlington, the consolation bracket games are played at the middle school next Saturday. The third-place and championship games are at the high school.
Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat teams play in the 2011 Lancer Classic at Southeast High School in Cherokee. The opening round is Tuesday then play resumes Thursday and Saturday.
Both Marmaton Valley teams are seeded eighth in their respective divisions. The Wildcat girls play top-seeded Frontenac at 4 p.m. Tuesday followed by the Wildcat boys taking on top-seeded Oswego at 5:30. Both games are in the SEHS east gym.
Marmaton Valley’s boys placed seventh at last year’s tournament. The girls were eighth.
Teams from Humboldt, Crest and Uniontown are in the 2011 Pleasanton High Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament in Pleasanton. No brackets were available as of yet for the tournament. This week’s snow cancellations threw a wrench into the process.
Games at the Blu-Jay tournament are played on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Pairings will be in the Register as soon as brackets are available.
Last year, Crest High’s Lancers and the Uniontown High Eagle girls reached the championship games. Both lost and took second place. Humboldt’s Cubs were third and the Lady Cubs were eighth. Uniontown’s boys finished fifth and the Lady Lancers of Crest were sixth.
There’s plenty of action throughout the week for high school basketball junkies.

ALLEN COUNTY Community College’s Red Devil teams are mired in losing streaks as Jayhawk Eastern Division play continues. The Red Devil teams have a good opportunity to break those skids Saturday against Labette Community College’s teams at Parsons.
The Red Devil men have lost  three in a row since Christmas and are 0-5 in Jayhawk East play. The Red Devil women are in a 13-game losing streak and are 0-5 in conference play.
Labette’s women are 2-3 in conference play and 5-12 overall. The LCC Cardinal men are 0-5 and 2-15.
Allen County’s Red Devils need to heat things up a bit to get started on the winning path.
