LE ROY — Lancer Kobey Miller connected four times from beyond the arc in the first quarter, including a 3-point buzzer beater to put the Lancers up 28-7. Crest’s dominance continued as they rolled past Southern Coffey County, 71-36 in Thursday’s opener.

“We needed a start like this,” said Lancer head coach Travis Hermreck. “We had a lot of questions about ourselves, and didn’t know what we were going to see tonight. I’m really proud of the effort, and proud of our unselfish basketball.”

The Lancers opened the game on a 13-2 run before a timeout by Titan head coach Jay Applegate. The Lancers closed the quarter on another 15-5 run, with Miller scoring 16 of the Lancers’ 28 first-half points.

“He is a kid when he gets rolling, can flat out fill it up,” Hermreck said. “He has that look in his eye when he gets his feet set. It’s going in. He will become a lot more consistent over the course of the season.”

The only bright spot for the Titans early on was Wade Gleue, who finished with a team high 14 points. SCC was unable to find their rhythm, which can be attributed to their youth and roster size.

Currently, SCC has a seven-player roster constructed of two freshmen, four sophomores and one junior. The Titans’ lone upperclassman, Nathan Borntrager, was kept in check by the Lancer defense, scoring seven points in the contest.

Crest continued to dominate in the second period. Jacquez Coleman threaded the needle to Hermreck who converted from the inside to start the second. The Lancers outscored SCC 12-8 to head into half up 40-15.

“Our players worked hard, but we just aren’t there yet,” Applegate said. “We have to work on a lot of things. On our rotation on defense, we did not do a good job of getting out to guard their shots. But they are a good team and Travis does a tremendous job with them. They have had a couple of years like we might have right now, but they have come back. We just need to work hard to get better.”

Crest held a 30-point lead entering the fourth quarter, emptying their bench with 7:08 left on the clock. Tucker Yocham nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Lancers as they closed out the match.

“We didn’t have a JV game tonight, so we wanted to hopefully have the opportunity to let those young guys get in there,” Hermreck said. “They have been busting their buns for three weeks too, and wanted to hit some threes.”

Miller finished with a team high 25 points, converting 5-12 from long range. Also scoring for the Lancers in double figures were Zach Beckmon with 11, and Tyson Hermreck with 10.
