High School Tennis: Iola Mustangs
The Iola tennis team wrapped up the regular season on Friday at the Chanute Invitational.
Jon Miller and Elijah Fawson finished second in the tournament and the doubles teams of Eason Cheung and Bret Plumlee and Adryan Nading and Gabe Berry did not medal.
Miller opened things up against Paola and got an 8-2 win before getting an 8-1 win over Fort Scott. He then fell just short in the championship match, losing to Ashton King of El Dorado in extra points (8-7).
Fawson opened things up with an 8-2 win over Chanute in round one before getting an 8-3 win over Fort Scott in round two. Fawson lost 8-2 in the championship game to Julius Maucher of Chanute.
The No. 1 doubles team of Cheung and Plumlee lost 8-4 to Labette County in the first round before getting an 8-6 win in round two over Paola. They then lost the fifth-place match versus Chanute 8-3.
Nading and Berry lost 8-4 in the opening round to Paola before getting knocked out of the tournament with an 8-5 loss to Columbus.
The Mustangs will head to Independence on May 3 and 4 for regional tennis action. The top six singles and doubles finishers at each regional tournament will qualify for the state tournament held at Winfield High School.
