Iola High’s boys tennis team hosted its only home matches of the year against Columbus, Independence and Parsons on Thursday.
Isaiah Fawson played as the team’s no. 1 singles player, filling in for Colby Works, who had a commitment elsewhere.
“Isaiah only got to play two matches because it was too dark to play his third,” coach Dan Berg said. “He played well in the no. 1 position.”
Fawson finished the day 0-2. He lost to Columbus’ Max Jameson 8-2 and Parsons’ Dequinwan Wells 8-5.
In the team’s first tournament on Tuesday Fawson played as Mason Key’s doubles partner.
On Thursday, Key was joined by Rhett Allen.
“They had a good day, going undefeated,” Berg said. “Independence was very tough to beat.”
As the number one doubles’ pair, Key and Allen went 3-0. The duo beat Columbus 8-1, Independence 8-2 and Parsons 8-1.
Connor Farrell, Iola’s no. 2 singles player, went 1-2 on the day.
“Connor started off well, but did not finish as strongly,” Berg said.
Farrell started the day with an 8-6 win over Parsons’ Christian Baldwin. He lost to Indy’s Dmitri McCaffery 8-0 and Columbus’ Gage Riker 8-1.
Tyler Holloway and Glenn Thomas represented Iola’s no. 2 doubles team. They went 0-2. The pair lost 8-7 (7-2 in overtime) to Indy. They also lost to Parsons 8-6.
“Tyler and Glenn had some very good sets. The tiebreaker worked against them.”
Overall, Berg was happy with his team’s play.
“It was very cold and I think our team did very well at home,” Berg said.
The team heads to Independence today for another tournament.
