Iola and Humboldt High traveled to Fredonia on Saturday for an all-day wrestling tournament.
Here is how each individual performed from their respective schools:
Iola
Ryan Wools placed fourth in the 106-pound division. Wools received a bye in the first round before earning a quarterfinal win by fall. He then fell short in the semifinals, losing by fall to Erie’s Drayton Kennedy. Wools finished with a win in the consolation semis by decision (9-6), advancing to the third place match where he lost by a 4-3 decision.
After losing his quarterfinal matchup, TJ Taylor rebounded for three straight wins in 113-pound action. Taylor won by fall in the first consolation round, an 8-6 decision in the next round, and by fall in the third-place match to claim silver.
Landon Nading finished 2-1 on the day to finish second in the 120-pound division. Nading earned a win by decision (8-4), and fall to capture a position in the championship bout where he lost by a 7-3 decision.
Trent Jones followed up his strong outing in Eureka with a second-place finish in the 145-pound weight class. Jones cruised through the first three rounds, winning by fall in each, but in the championship match he faced a familiar foe. Last week, Jones toppled Fredonia’s and 3A’s number-one wrestler, Matt Weilert, but this week Jones found himself on the short end of the stick. Weilert earned the slim victory by decision (4-2) to claim the top spot over Jones.
Adam Atwell managed a 1-3 outing in the 152-pound division. The sophomore received a bye to start before losing by fall in the quarterfinals. Atwell responded for a win by fall in the consolation semis, but couldn’t repeat the winning formula in the next round.
Gary Lower placed fourth in the 220-pound weight class, finishing 2-2 on the afternoon. Lower received a bye in the first round before earning a win by fall in the quarterfinals. After falling short in the semifinals, Lower picked up a win by fall in the consolation semis, but fell short in third place match, losing by fall.
Crystal Lindsey’s solo win was good enough for fourth in the girls’ 235-pound division. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Lindsey was defeated by fall in the semifinals. Lindsey recovered for a win by fall in the consolation semis, but came up short in the third-place match, losing by fall.
For the second week in a row, Logan Brown was the only Mustang to finish with a gold medal around his neck. Brown won all four matches by fall to finish first in the 285-pound division.
Wrestlers Ashtyn Aikins and Dominic McGhee both finished winless at 0-2 on the day.
Humboldt
Colton Johnson secured one win in his three matches in the 138-pound weight class. Johnson won by fall in the first round before losing by the same result in the quarterfinals and consolation round.
Gunner Elder was the only Cub wrestler to finish first in his respective weight class. Elder won by fall and an 11-1 decision in his first two rounds, advancing to the 138-pound semifinal match. There he won by fall, and decision (9-5) in the match for gold.
Cheyenne Harris finished third in the girls’ 143-pound division. Harris won by fall in the quarterfinals before losing by the same result in the semifinals. Harris recovered for two consecutive wins by fall to earn bronze. Harris is a January Allen County Area Athlete of the Month nominee.
Alayna Johnson finished 1-2 in girls’ 155-pound action. Johnson’s solo triumph came in her first consolation match where she won by fall. The only other girl to compete on the mat from Humboldt was Anna Goforth, who finished 3-2 to earn fifth in the 170-pound weight class. All three of Goforth’s victories came by fall.
Andrew Watts posted the next best Cub performance behind Elder, earning silver in the 285-pound division. After receiving a bye in the first round, Watts picked up two wins by fall, claiming a spot in the championship bout. There he ran into Iola’s Brown, who topped Watts by fall to cement first place.
