Mustangs strike gold in five events

FREDONIA — Iola High’s Mustangs had a good day on the track and in field events at Friday’s 71st Annual Fredonia Relays held by Fredonia High School.
They finished second to Andover Central. They had five gold medal performances to lead the way.
Darin Hutton, back after being out with an illness, claimed the gold medal in the shot put. Kyle Heffern was third.
Hutton was third in the discus with Kykler Thompson placing fifth and Heffern sixth.
“We had a big lead with four events to go but only scored seven points in those events while Andover Central was scoring more,” Smith said.
No official marks or distances were available because of computer problem, Smith said. As soon as he receives the results, the Register will publish official marks.
Aaron Fulton won the javelin with Ralph Shafer placing third and Dylan Allen sixth. Drew Shepherd had a personal-best vault, 11 feet, to take fourth in the pole vault.
Ethan Fulton and Aaron Fulton went 1-2 in the 110-meter high hurdles and in the long jump. Allen was fifth in the long jump.
Iola’s 4×800-meter relay team of Aaron Cheung, Seth Browning, Christian Kauth and Ryan Weir captured gold. Roman Yocham took third in the 1600-meter run and Bryan Miller was sixth in the 3200-meter run.
Kauth placed second in the triple jump. Mikal Bossell was fourth in the 400-meter dash with Charles Apt in fifth.
Taking fourth were the 4×100-meter relay team of A. Fulton, Dakota Sigg, Shane Snavely and E. Fulton and the 4×400-meter relay team of Bossell, Snavely, Kauth and Weir.
Allen placed fourth in the 100-meter dash. Browning was sixth in the 800 meters and in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.
The Mustang varsity goes to Osawatomie Thursday.
