PITTSBURG — A last-minute schedule change put added pressure on Iola High’s tennis team.
The Mustangs traveled to a competition at Pittsburg, but did so without services of No. 2 singles player Jordan Strickler.
Jordan was unable to attend because of rehearsals for the IHS drama production “Grease.”
His replacement, Tyler Holloway, was pressed into varsity action.
“This was his first meet ever,” Kern said. Holloway went 0-4 on the day against the more experienced competition.
The Mustangs were met with varying degrees of success.
Tyler Heinrich, the No. 1 singles player, went 2-2. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Stephen McDonald and Mason Key went 1-3, while the No. 2 doubles team of Bryan Mueller and Colby Works went 2-2.
Going short-handed “hurt our team standings quite a bit,” Kern said.
He estimated Iola finished “third or fourth” in the five-team competition.
Iola has three more competitions within the next week, beginning today with the Neodesha Invitational, starting at 9 a.m. The Mustangs travel to Coffeyville Tuesday and Chanute Friday. Both meets begin at 3 p.m.
